Sometimes it can be easy to take your state for granted. Seeing wide blue skies and wide open fields each day makes you forget how uniquely beautiful North Dakota is.

Hunting season is a great time to rediscover the rich natural resources North Dakota has to offer. Thousands of North Dakotans hunt geese, pheasant, deer and other game every fall. We enjoy spending time with friends and family in the great outdoors.

What many hunters may not realize is that while they are enjoying their sport, they are also helping preserve North Dakota’s wildlife and habitat for future sportsmen.

Through a federal law known as the Pittman-Robertson Act, each time hunters purchase guns, licenses and ammunition, they pay an 11 percent special excise tax that helps fund programs in hunter training, habitat preservation and wildlife conservation.

Over the 75 years of the program’s existence, millions of dollars have returned to the states, including North Dakota, to fund wildlife and habitat restoration.

The Pittman-Robertson Act is a great way of preserving North Dakota’s wildlife for future generations of hunters.

During the 75th anniversary of this important legislation, everyone should remember the many benefits hunters bring to our great state.
